Before operating a power vessel, including a personal watercraft, on the waterways of New Jersey, the mandatory boat safety course required by section 2 of the P.L. 1987, c.453 (C.12:7-61) must be successfully completed.
Changes to New Jersey boating statutes require all power vessel operators to possess a boating safety certificate from an approved course by June 1, 2009. Additional details may be found with the New Jersey State Police's Marine Services Bureau.
We offer two courses, taken either as a single day class or a multiple day class.
One Day Boat Safety Course: an approved one-day boat safety course 8 hours in length which consists of in-person, formal instruction and culminates with a closed book, in-person, proctored exam. The time required to complete the exam is included within the 8 hour time requirement.
Multiple Day Boat Safety Course: an approved multi-day boat safety course which consists of at least 6 hours of in-person, formal instruction and culminates with a closed book, in-person, proctored exam. Written homework is assigned as necessary so that the total course time (6 or more hours of in-person instruction + test + written homework) equals at least 8 hours. The time required to complete the exam and homework is not included within the 6 hours of in-person instruction.
Our small class size increases the learning atmosphere and allows greater interaction between students and the instructor. Written course material, power point program and VCR presentations are used as study aids to supplement the instructor's teachings.
